Place the high product prices with slick advertising and big name actresses and the consumer can discover their products are of low quality and their effectiveness, according to consumers, is often dissapointing. The products are often costly and, as many consumers discover, these much vaunted products often contain low quality ingredients. And worse, some of these chemicals have been identified as carcinogens, yes, they can cause cancer.

Some time ago, I experienced sticker shock when I saw the prices visiting my local chain drug store. A 1.7 oz jar of moisturizer was on sale for $54.00. Testers were provided and when I placed some of this creme on top of my hand I immediately determined it would never touch my face. Naturally, the next step was reading the ingredients. The big name high price skin care contained cheap synthetic substances and miniscule quantities of quality ingredients.

After having extensively researched the constituents of mass produced skin care products, it has become apparent that they can lead to skin irritation, cause problematic skin (acne), and premature aging.

We all love something for free. The consumer is lured to department stores for the ambience of the store and the visual appeal of the bottling and corrugated boxes provided with the products. Here's the trick: the consumer really pays for the marketing ploys, the cardboard, the cellophane, the nice music and the parfumed atmosphere.

Lots of people are animal lovers and won't use products tested on animals, and that's great. Ironically, they unknowingly use household name products, that are tested on animals. PETA has the list of these companies. Some people ask, how bad can it be to test a cleanser on an animal? One example, the product is sprayed into the animals eyes. If the animal's eyes burn a lot it's an indication the product may not be good for sensitive human skin. The first person to test Motion Medica is me. If or when it passes my skin standards I then ask clients to test the new product with their feedback. Most companies consider this a big risk and have their employees test and not the consumers-the ultimate decision maker of a product.

So how can small ethical skin care companies manufacturers afford to make a good product with high concentration of expensive ingredients that actually works for positive results? We use a tiny advertising budget, unadorned plastic bottles/jars and labels; and purchase ingredients from local farmers (botanicals and herbs) and suppliers rather than China, while using these resources to make a truly good product that won't dissapoint the consumer or hurt their budget. Grow a company from nothing with no big advertising and word of mouth by clients gives credibility to the product line.

Use a skin care line that is botanical based and chemical free. However, there are skin care lines popping up that claim "all natural" and organic when they are not. Mainstream vs. Atypical. I'll let you decide who is the winner.

By Sandy Alcide
Founder of Motion Medica skin careCo-Author Dr. John Daniels Redfern, Australia
Copyright 2011 Sandy Alcide

How to care for athletes' skin to prevent negative effects

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 310px; height: 310px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EtmWlmvdRYo/TyMdkFH5jgI/AAAAAAAAAOo/C5AilOjpeNQ/s320/ExerciseArticle-310.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702434058868985346" />
It's obvious how great exercise is for healthy strong body and mind. But some side effects of exercise are not particularly beneficial for your skin.

When you exercise your cardiovascular system rushes freshly oxygenated blood to the surface to feed your muscles. Because of the high amount of oxygen content the bright red blood plumps up your skin making it larger and thicker. Perspiration naturally occurs to cool off your body and expels salt, oils and natural toxins on to the skin. These natural functions brought on by exercise and heat can cause a variety of consequences to your skin.

As fitness enthusiasts we have different nutritional needs, we need different clothing during our physical activity and we drink more water. However, many may not realize that their skin-care needs also differ.

Even those who have a clear complexion find that routine physical exertion can result in occasional blemishes, clogged pores, dryness and dullness. Scientists are still uncertain about the exact causes, but they do have some worthwhile theories and solutions.

Oily Skin
Sebum, an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands housed in the pores of our skin, reduces the skin's water loss and helps protect it from dryness and cracking. Anaerobic Bacterium Propionibacterium acnes, colonized on the skin, is neither helped or harmed. Sebum's presence in a blocked pore can lead to an acne lesion (blemish) or blackheads. Pimples tend to worsen because the swollen skin from a workout irritates the existing pimples and helps to create new breakouts which can be larger or painful.

Oily skin becomes oiler from sweating as the salts and acids mix with sebum which glues down dead skin cells creating a coating akin to plastic wrap on the skin. A deep pore cleanser and one which includes exfoliation benefits that does not strip necessary oils can help remove the extra oil that is brought to the skin's surface during exercise will remove the bacteria on the skin leading to a clearer complexion.

Adequate moisture levels are still necessary for this skin type. A moisturizer formulated with both camphor extracts to keep skin soft and Citrus extracts to stabilize oil levels and kill off bacteria is key for this skin type.

Dry Skin
During exercise, skin can become dehydrated due to the high levels of sodium in perspiration. People who consume sports drinks with added sodium may increase their likelihood of dry skin even more. Dry skin becomes more prominent, irritated, flaky and rough due to the high amounts of salts and acids deposited on the skin via sweat.

A cleanser with proper cleansing agents and astringents is essential for this skin type. Dry skin also needs to be gently exfoliated twice a week to rid dead skin cells and flaky skin. This will help for the moisturizer and nutrients in the cleanser to penetrate into the skin resulting in a softer appearance.

Some exercisers don't realize their skin has a dry appearance until they are on a specialized product regimen which eventually cures their dryness to a healthier appearance.

Combination Skin
This skin type needs to be balanced. In most cases using only one type of cleanser will not be the solution.

A cleanser formulated for this specific skin type would be best for every day use, but on days when skin feels oily or dry due to climate or workout conditions, alternating to a cleanser formulated for these occasional occurrences is necessary.

Combination skin also needs an exfoliating cleanser on a once daily basis and include a daily moisturizer twice a day.

Damaged or Neglected Skin
Many endurance athletes, swimmers and persons who engage in outdoor sports (runners, tennis players & sports lovers) suffer from sun damaged or prematurely aging skin. Some simply never made the time to care for their skin because of time demanding workouts. Exercise is said to be the fountain of youth, but when the skin is dried out, a dried wrinkly appearance results, and can make a person appear older.

Disciplining yourself by applying a long lasting sun block formulated for an athletic lifestyle and an anti aging treatment which emulates human sebum is key for this skin type. Cleansing the skin within 30 minutes of post workout will help rid sweat expelled toxins and bacteria that penetrate the skin after thirty minutes.

Applying a serum before exercise will help to protect the skin and generalize neutral waste in sweat. For those who don't have time to hit the shower after a workout, a chemical-free botanical mist formulated for post exercise is a good option, as it will help to kill odor and acne causing bacteria.

Most people will agree that exercise is good for the entire body. With the proper special care, fitness enthusiasts can sport healthy, vibrant skin and with careful product selection that healthy glow of exercise can shine through.

By Sandy Alcide. But when they get a closer look and realize you’re covered in acne, your six-pack abs can’t save you. Skin, the body’s largest organ, can be riddled with acne problems after a workout.

Even if you don’t suffer from excessive acne, your training may be adversely affecting your skin. Yes, acne can be induced by exercise. But exactly what causes this? Scientists are still uncertain what the exact cause is, but they do have some worthwhile theories. Your lymphatic system is controlled by movement and operates best during exercise. The lymphatic system is also known as “the drainage system of the body”. This system consists of lymph nodes & vessels that carry lymph fluid around your body. This amazing circuit collects waste from tissues and returns it to the blood after it has been fully purified.

If the lymph is insufficiently activated, cells swim in their own waste which can block pores. Lymph fluid is a transparent, pale yellow fluid that carries cells that help fight infection. When the blood cells are not able to unload their toxins via the kidneys, they go to the next best eliminative organ: your skin! When bacteria starts to set in the pores it causes acne. A raised heart rate brought on by exercise also activates your oil- producing sebaceous glands. Some people have over active sebaceous glands to begin with and, when mixed with lymph fluid, toxins, or bacteria, the condition produces blemishes induced by exercise. This can creep up on us over a long period of time, which is why persons who never had acne are suddenly plagued by it, regardless of what age the exerciser is.

Because acne appears on one’s outermost layer, the epidermis, there are natural topical remedies which can be used to the exercisers’ advantage. Most acne treatments tend to dry the skin with chemicals and mass- production methods. Organic botanical and herbal extracts which use a processing method called “cold pressing” eliminate alcohol content. Some key plant ingredients in acne treatments are salicylic acid, derived from willow bark and aspen bark extract and coltsfoot. Salicylic Acid is a natural beta hydroxy acid which exfoliates surface dead skin cells (keratinocytes) and debris that cause acne.

Although there is no quick fix for acne, there are treatments that can help to keep the acne at bay once healed. Camphor, a thick oil derived from the wood of the cnamonum caphora tree, is grown in the Far East. It has been valued for natural remedies since the 12th century. Camphor is now being used to cure acne as a medicinal ingredient that purges skin to remove toxins. Bentonite is a fine mineral clay used to draw excess oil from the skin. When using products containing this combination of natural ingredients as a daily treatment, it has been proven to help with acne induced by exercise without drying the skin.

By Sandy Alcide Copyright 2007 All Rights Reserved. Creme Moisturizers

In a time crunched society people are always seeking products that are more convenient and less time consuming. Before you purchase a moisturizing spray, you may want to know what the difference is between a spray on moisturizers and a creme moisturizer.

Originally, spray moisturizers were available for a person’s hair. Now, they are being made and touted by the skin care industry as a convenient moisturizer for the skin. Proven effective for hair; they may be convenient, but are they really an effective moisturizer to ward off dryness of skin?

Hair is different than skin. The outer layer of the hair (cuticle) covering the hair protects the molecular layer of lipid that makes hair repel water. But the complex structure of skin is different from hair.

There are two basic categories of moisturizers: humectants (absorb water from the air) and emollients. Emollients soften the skin by delivering the ingredients directly into skin. Unlike humectants, emollients bring moisture to your skin by the ‘composition’ of the product.. A main function of an emollient is to trap moisture in the skin. If you don’t properly apply an emollient, such as a “creme” composition-you may just be trapping moisture outside the skin, eventually leading to dryness.

Moisturizers are a creme or lotion that act like natural lipids found in healthy skin and the deep layers of the skin. Creme moisturizers work by preventing water from evaporating from the skin. Creme and lotions, in a non-greasy formula are easily absorbed into the skin. Cremes are slightly thicker than lotions and are better for those with very severe, dehydrated skin. A spray moisturizer mostly contains water will simply lay atop of your skin and give you a temporary feeling of softness. Not all creme moisturizers are heavy and greasy feeling and skin can be breathable. A common ingredient found in a lot of creme/lotions is mineral oil, one ingredient to avoid when choosing a moisturizer. Water, the main ingredient in spray on moisturizers, will not give your skin adequate moisture levels.

A key ingredient in creme moisturizers is Dimeticone (also known as silicon fluid), is a water-repellent substance used to protect the skin. This ingredient is not found in spray moisturizers because it can not be sprayed or in a mist form.

A spray on moisturizer advertised their product by stating: “The world’s lightest moisturizer ever”. A mist solution to heavy creme moisturizers”. The key ingredients are Water (Aqua), Sodium PCA, Cetrimonium Chloride, Sea Salt, Parabens, Fragrance (Parfum).

The name of a spray on moisturizer being sold is: “Mineral Spray Skin Moisturizer”. It then stated “Refresh & Invigorate Your Skin With A Fresh Spritz of (name of product excluded). The two ingredients listed: Water, Nitrogen as Propellant. Water, the main ingredient, will not give your skin adequate moisture levels. A propellant serves to dispense the contents of an aerosol or liquid. How does this product moisturize your skin? It doesn’t.
For people with extremely dry skin from certain lifestyles as frequent sun exposure, use of tanning beds, frequent swimmers in chlorine and salt water, and eczema; it is vital for them to use a creme moisturizer as their skin will severely dry out leading to a weathered appearance and speed up the signs of aging the skin.

It’s important to apply moisturizer regularly, at least twice a day and always after cleansing to prevent skin from drying.

Quick, convenient skin care products can result in a disappointing appearance to your skin. A little extra time taken to apply the correct moisturizer is a smart investment for your skin’s health. If you would like to refresh your skin with water and other non-essential ingredients for adequate moisture, then the spritzers may be good for you. Obviously, if a spray-on product is called a moisturizer, it really isn’t.

By Sandy Alcide
Copyright 2012 All Rights Reserved
Sandy Alcide is the founder of Motion Medica. How is this possible?

To touch the face of one who is always in the limelight (whether they want to be or not), your product needs to be good. No. Great. While most mass produced brands spend a ton of money on advertising and unique bottling and jars, they must work on a high profit margin to pay for the advertising and to make a profit. The ingredients listed are also over the top and unique. But how much of them is really in the product? Not much. Working on a high profit margin, with expensive ads in prestigious magazines-put a high price on the product, and well, it must be good? Not really. Some consumers believe the higher the price the better the product. Take a 2oz jar of moisturizer selling at a fancy department store with a price of
$135.00. A comparable product with the exact ingredients and amount of ingredients, not found in the department store can sell for $35.00 and give you the same excellent results.

Socialites and celebrities are savvy with their personal products.

Most of them purchase "underground' skin care lines. The word underground can have a few meanings as a noun, verb or adjective. In skin care it's a term used for products that are outside the use of the general population. They are more socially conscious than "mainstream", or a better known term-"mass produced" products.

Underground skin care lines are usually hand crafted with the finest ingredients while following all FDA regulations. The money is not spent on corporate advertising teams, hundreds of thousands of dollars for advertising in glamorous magazines and national television ads.

You may be wondering "well a famous actress appears in the T.V ads", she must use the product". Um, sorry-no. When you are working in the industry, and are trust-worthy, many personal assistants and make-up artists to the stars will disclose the product line their boss uses. It's rarely mass produced-or appears in television and magazine ads. Also, an ethical owner of an underground skin care line will always remain discreet who she has as clients and would never exploit a famous client. It's simply not worth losing the reputation of being trust worthy and ethical. A business owners' personal reputation is as important as her products.

Don't underestimate your non-mainstream skin care products or judge the line by the unadorned packaging or website.

As for "Awards" given to skin care lines by magazines. Did it ever occur to you that these awards are always given to the skin care products that advertise in their magazine frequently? Ponder that a bit.

Consumers are confused what really is the best skin care products. People spend lots of money trying different brands with sometimes disappointing results and always hoping for radiant, clear skin. Step out of mass produced skin care lines and give your small underground skin care company a try. You may be pleasantly surprised and with a lot of money saved. If you are not receiving a compliment on your skin at least once a week, or people noticing a remarkable improvement with its appearance; it may be time to switch your brand-without regret.

By Sandy Alcide. (Transportation Security Administration) for their readers. Better products you can carry on to an airplane.

Belonging to all sorts of skin care associations, this was the first I heard of this. I googled the request and found no skin care products approved by the TSA. What I did find, are websites named around this ploy that their products were better because they are TSA approved. In fact, one website had it's name and product name related closely to air travel, with a picture of an airplane for their logo (I'm not one to name names). One product line claimed "our products will get you through security check quicker".

Giving benefit of doubt. I read the ingredients of the products and found none of them to have an edge for poor quality air in a plane. Nevertheless, the products were 3.4 ounces or less and non-aerosol.

I decided to contact the TSA directly and spoke to a helpful agent. I asked her if there were skin care products approved by the TSA for travel after explaining my confusion. Her answer to me was: "The TSA does not endorse, select or give any type of approval to skin care products. As long as the products are 3.4 ounces or less and non-aerosol in a clear bag-they are approved to carry on a plane at security check".

So, next time you are packing for a trip via airplane-you don't need to use a particular skin care line to get you through security check any quicker than your current favorite brand. Nor will a skin care line with a logo of an airplane on it get you points and extra smiles from an agent at security check out.

Happy, safe traveling!

By Sandy Alcide founder of Motion Medica skin care. A non-mainstream skin care line without the fluff.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fitnessandskincare.blogspot.com/2011/11/tsa-approved-skin-care-products.html' title='TSA approved skin care products? Notice how a person tends to breakout with pimples on the face rather than the tops of hands, arms and legs? The skin condition between our face and body are different.

Have you ever seen a body lotion marked as "non-comedogenic"? You see this a lot on cremes and moisturizers for the face. Ingredients in facial and body lotions can be similar, but the concentration of certain ingredients, mostly emollients, are higher in body lotions, hands, arms and legs tend to be drier than the face. Products that contain "oil" in both facial and body lotions should not be used. Oils will clog the pores of the face leading to possible breakouts of white/blackheads and pimples. Oils in body cremes may make your skin feel soft but they tend to lay on top of skin rather than absorbing into skin for proper hydration.

A product you can apply both on face and body? You can apply facial moisturizer on your body especially where skin may tend to breakout like the chest, back and shoulder area. Never apply body lotion or hand lotion on your face.

A new moisturizing body lotion with Citrus, White Tea and Lactic Acid softens and reduces dry skin. However, by eliminating this technique and keeping your skin care regimen simple-you can have soft, glowing skin in the most harsh winter months.

Working With Winter Skin Ailments – What To Do and What Not To DoPosted By Ann Sandretto Comments (0)
Friday, October 14, 2011

Winter is coming and with it comes dry skin. Skin care professional, Sandy Alcide, has some great tips for facial skin care. Here’s what she says:

Around the country, climates vary. Winter is coming and our skin experiences are similar. Your skin is dealing with strong winds, indoor heaters, cold dry air, rain, snow sleet. You get the idea. Skin can become dull and dry – but have no fear. Your skin’s prevention of winter ailments are simple.

What NOT To Do:

There is a new buzz word going around in skin care called “Hydrotherapy“. It’s even suggested and used by skin care professionals. What is “Hydrotherapy“? They suggest you start your day with a hot steamy shower and when you finish showering switch to cold water for a few seconds. Then, repeat the process for 2 minutes. This technique claims to revitalize your skin by stimulating the flow of blood through skin.

What it actually does is “shock your skin” and the hot water dries the skin. Going from steamy hot to cold water can cause broken blood vessels. Your water temperature should be lukewarm. If you want your skin revitalized by stimulating blood through it – exercise.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

If your skin is itching or you have dry patches, it’s because the dry air of winter causes the moisture in the top layer of your skin to evaporate quickly. Use an extra dose of moisturizer for these areas. Never use pure oils on your skin. This will clog your pores and only make your skin feel soft, but it’s temporary as your skin can’t really absorb them well for hydration. Use a good quality moisturizer specifically for dry skin. Anything else will leave your skin incapable of warding off dry skin.

Exfoliate!

At least twice a week exfoliate to remove dead skin cells which work as a barrier for moisturizers to penetrate your skin. Dry indoor heat plays havoc on the natural sebum our skin produces which makes skin lose water in the lower dermas layer of skin. In the winter you have more dry skin cells that need to be sloughed off. Those dry flaky patches are proof of this. Simply applying moisturizer on them will not cure it. You need to exfoliate them off and then apply moisturizer. Do not use exfoliators that contain nut shells or fruit seed as inexpensive exfoliating agents. This will abrade delicate skin tissue.

Showering:

Another suggestion going around in the skin care industry is to use hair conditioner on your body in the shower for dry skin. Hair conditioner is formulated for hair-not skin. If you want a film on your skin and a cause for possible breakouts than hair conditioner will do it. After showering or bathing, pat your skin dry and use a body creme. Motion Medica has launched a new body creme with lactic acid that breaks up dead skin cells with emollients to hydrate skin without oil and parabens.

And, yes, I admit I have a habit of repeating myself. Drink lots of water, continue with a healthy diet and use a sunblock on sunny days and as a skin protectant from extreme weather conditions-if you decide to go for a run or power walk outdoors in 10 degrees don’t use petroleum jelly, use a sunblock.

Keep it simple and your skin will be soft and radiant in the coming winter months.

For some more facial skin care tips, read what Sandy says about “How To Give Yourself A Facial – The Correct Way”

Sandy Alcide – Founder Motion Medica skin care
http://fitnessandskincare.blogspot.com
http://www.americanathleticskincareassociation.webs.com
salcide@fbscc.com
Filed Under Skin Care, Skin Care & YouWritten by Ann Sandretto Subscribe via RSS
del.icio.us Blink it Yahoo Stumble Google Technorati Digg it
Comments

Is your "natural" bronzer toxic or non-toxic?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LXyaJicyJQ4/TonViAf0c3I/AAAAAAAAAJM/ikijiSoEaJI/s400/1311951644-16.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5659289186993468274" />
Consumers may be spending more time and money than necessary to avoid products that are "unnatural" and, therefore unsafe. This comes to the controversy over the ingredient-bismuth oxychloride, a chemical compound found in products labeled "natural". This ingredient is popular in mineral powders, bronzers, blush, eye shadows and nail polish.

What is bismuth oxychloride and what is it used for? Bismuth oxychloride is a synthetically prepared compound derived from natural elements. Oxygen and chlorine (oxychloride) is being approved for use up to certain concentration levels in cosmetics in many products. So, the questionable element is bismuth. Bismuth is a natural metal. It's actually a non-toxic heavy metal approved for use as a color additive in cosmetics by the U.S. FDA. It is also widely used for it's ability to create a shimmery look and silky feel in addition to its ability to adhere to skin.

Why all the conflict if approved for cosmetics? Bismuth is in the same family of elements as arsenic, and thus resembles bismuth. Another concern by opposers of the compound is that it is listed in Material Safety Sheets (when handling the ingredient in the raw), that bismuth oxychloride can cause skin irritation. This may be the reason why some people feel they are sensitive to mineral powders, when it's actually this ingredient sensitizing the skin. Also, by applying the mineral powder and blushers more than twice a day to "fix up" their make-up may intensify the sensitivity.

Approved by the FDA, cosmetic consumers will continue to see bismuth oxychloride on the list of ingredients found in many make-up labels. It is up to the individual if she will continue to purchase these products with this ingredient. Persons with sensitive skin should try to avoid it. If you absolutely love your cosmetics with this ingredient in it and the side effects are of no concern, then continue with your favorite brand.

By Sandy Alcide, founder Motion Medica skin care. A division of Fitness Botanical Skin Care Co.
Copyright 2011. A popular day time television show recently e-mailed me about how they wanted to do a segment about "exfoliating blackheads". I replied, "Although I appreciate the offer, I can't provide you with any information because this will worsen peoples' skin with this ailment". I don't know if it ever aired, I haven't had time to watch day time television in many years.

So why should you not use this skin care method with blackheads? What exactly is blackheads? They are the result of excessive oil and dirt in our pores. Medically defined as, "open comodone", are usually the first stages of acne. They may or may not develop into skin inflammation and infection = a pimple.

The "black" of the blackhead is not dirt. The oils blocking your pores when exposed to air, oxidize causing oil to become solid. The blocked pore reflects light and looks black.

Getting rid of blackheads is easy. You are only removing clogged oil from pores. Exfoliating them will not get rid of them but will irritate it and cause acne. Blackheads need to be extracted-correctly. If you don't know how to extract blackheads visit a skin care specialist. The most important element in not having blackheads is preventing them to occur. This is where exfoliating your skin comes into a major role among one of the benefits of exfoliating.

Buying a cleanser and buying an exfoliating wash is not necessary. Simply use a 2-In-1 exfoliating cleanser with the correct ingredients. One that has exfoliating agents that will not abrade delicate skin tissue incorporated into the cleanser with salicylic acid-and other natural ingredients that will promote healthy skin is even better. Use one that avid exercisers use because avid exercise promotes more excessive oil and dead skin cells.

Hard scrubbing with excessive motion will not only irritate your skin but will worsen the condition. Scrub gently with warm water in a circular motion and you'll see greater results. Using a facial brush of any kind, even when it comes with the product is not only unnecessary but will cause irritation. Blackhead strips have minimal effect and have been found to cause excessive inflammation because only the surface of the blackhead is removed. Not getting "into" the pore leads to pimples. A strip can't do this.

Adhere to a regular routine of cleansing, for both face and body. A daily exfoliater is not necessary in addition to other skin care steps. The best exfoliater only needs to be used 3-4 times a week. This will clean away excess oil and dirt and dead skin cells that trap these into your skin. You'll also help give your skin a radiant boost and prevent anti-aging. For ladies, avoid wearing excessive make-up and make-up that is not water based. Allow your skin to breathe. Never exfoliate more than once a day. Too much of a good thing can be bad for your skin.

Visible results of clear, blackhead free skin will result if you use the above suggestions. Give it a try.

By Sandy Alcide, founder of Motion Medica skin care.
Sandy is a published author about effective skin care and President of the American Athletic Skin Care Association-Raising Awareness Among the Rise In Melanoma Among Outdoor Athletes.
Copyright 2011 all rights reserved.

Second thoughts about Safe Cosmetics Act 2011

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uW05Hwbo1G4/ThYUu0xJx4I/AAAAAAAAAIg/P8LPuizShFI/s320/SorryFlourescent.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626707579117356930" />
"I own my words. I agree with some of the new Act. I certainly don't disagree about synthetic chemicals in cosmetics and skin care that can cause cancer but congress went a bit over-board into misleading persons that natural ingredients, even cold pressed essential oils from fruit should be banned if not properly listed on the ingredients label. One essential oil they are opposed of is Orange Essential Oil. Considering I was active in this campaign, this was great news to me. I've had additional information sent to me that I can now finally share with consumers.

I give Washington due credit for giving the FDA recall authority for products misbranded, adulterated or otherwise fail to meet safety standards.

Why am I excited about this? Besides the well-being of the consumer it gives smaller companies who followed strict procedure before the law was passed due credit over the big companies who felt invincible to follow strict procedure. Ironically, many consumers seem to trust the ad campaigns in slick glamour magazines and commercials, from the big skin care and cosmetic companies and don't take the smaller companies seriously.

This year's bill included changes signed to ease any potential burdens a small cosmetic and personal care product manufacturers and clarify intent of the bill.
"The health risks caused by harmful chemicals, such as formaldehyde, in cosmetic products demonstrate the pressing need to see the products we use are safe. The Safe Cosmetics Act is critical to ensuring that personal care products do not compromise the health of the workers and consumers". Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis said.Key provisions in the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 include:

* Post market testing. Requires the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct annual random sample tests for pathogens or contaminants in cosmetic products. (I love this).

* Cosmetic companies will be required to register with the FDA.

* The FDA will establish a list of ingredients prohibited from being used in cosmetics. (Europe has been doing this). This includes carcinogens and reproductive and developmental toxins (often disguised by another ingredient name). Your favorite model and/or actress, doctor who is endorsing your favorite cosmetic or personal skin care brand may not realize the product has toxic ingredients). There is a skin care line always on television commercials with two dermatologists endorsing and taken credit for developing the product line. I wonder how they disguised one ingredient that is common household bleach. This line targets acne sufferers.

* The FDA will have recall authority for products that are misbranded, adulterated or otherwise fail to meet the safety standard. The FDA will be able to order ceasing of distribution of any cosmetic or personal skin care product. (Uh-oh, some big companies are scrambling to figure out what to do to avoid this).

Now you can feel a bit at ease knowing the government will be providing help to you. Many consumers don't have time to read and study up on the ingredients they apply on them. And, they shouldn't have to. I'm quite glad this Act went into effect. I hope you are too.

By Sandy Alcide founder Motion Medica skin care
Copyright 2011

Lotions & potions to reduce cellulite now targeted for athletes

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 168px; height: 153px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-upvCC-4vRNM/TffBdZ8R9hI/AAAAAAAAAIE/Wc_Rr-nXkZo/s320/leg%2Blotion%2Bpic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618171771092071954" />
With daily exercise and great nutritional diets-athletes are not cellulite free!

You may think this is a bit unfair but even with great lifestyle habits cellulite is predominate in woman over 30, and as young as woman in their twenties.

Cellulite refers to fibrous tissue and subcutaneous fat that causes dimples in the skin. On the inside of a rabbit's ear. But, this cute little critter's ear differs from human skin. It's histologically ( a branch of anatomy that works with tiny structure of animal and plant tissues.) Oh, never mind the scientific rhetoric.

Also, overlooked by big skin care companies when testing ingredients is when one ingredient is tested, it may not clog the pore. But when it's used with a mixture of other ingredients, it can clog the pore. It's safe to say "once you add one ingredient to another, you'll get a different ingredient".

Comedogenic ingredients are of an emollient nature, (softens skin), and this is not essential for oily skin that tends to have a high amount of natural lubrication.

Here are some of the highest pore clogging ingredients, even for dry skin.

Olive Oil (unless you are over the age of 60)
Cocoa Butter
Mineral Oil
Pure Coconut Oil
Sesame Oil
Pure Corn Oil
Avocado Oil (great only for hair)
Jojoba Oil (use only on body but avoid parts that tend to break out-shoulders, back).

All of these relatively inexpensive ingredients are best to avoid. If you don't want blackheads, (and who does), skip the use of a skin care product or cosmetic with these ingredients.

By Sandy Alcide. Use a 2 In 1 Exfoliating Cleanser-it will cleanse AND exfoliate dead skin cells all in one cleansing and you only need to use it 3 times a week. Not once a day.

Protect the skin before a workout. Apply a topical antioxidant before a sunscreen and your skin will thank you for the added protection by revealing a much radiant, acne free appearance without worry of skin damage from the sun and skin cancer.

During the meltdown of a hot sweaty workout, ditch the towelettes and grab a convenient botanical mist formulated to get you feeling refreshed and kills nasty acne causing bacteria until you can hit the shower.

Let your skin go through the wringer during a great workout without being preoccupied about the consequences.

Sandy Alcide has written for Fitness For Men, Bare Essentials, Bicycling, Fitness, San Diego Fitness, SCW Fitness, Beauty & Lace, Ms. Fitness. Here's the definition of mineral oil: A distillation product of petroleum ( a liquid by product of petroleum to produce gasoline and other petroleum based product from crude oil.) esp. one used as a lubricant, moisturizer or laxative.

Mineral oil is a substance of relatively low value, and it is produced in very high amounts. Refine mineral oils are aromatic oils (commonly used in candles), based on aromatic hydrocarbons-not to be confused with essential oils. Essential oils is a concentrate from plants and use a cold pressed method for extraction, not alcohol.

Although the skin care editors are only trying to be helpful, they may not realize what mineral oil/petroleum jelly actually does to your skin. In brief:

Mineral oil and other petroleum products coat the skin with a slick film that makes your skin feel soft and supple. But, it's not your skin you're feeling, it's the mineral oil. Underneath that slick surface, you have clogged pores that can't release toxins from perspiration, reduces dead skin cell turnover rate (trapping dirt and sweat), and can't naturally absorb moisture from the air. This is what mineral oil is ultimately doing to your skin.

Mineral oil fools the skin that it has adequate moisture from the air and your body naturally stops producing its own natural safe oils. This can lead to pre-mature aging of the skin and a dry weathered appearance.

Your skin basically become dysfunctional and can't do its job properly as the body's largest organ.

Why do some people suggest petroleum based products? Mainly to protect skin in cold, dry weather and as a moisturizer. The two main products usually containing mineral oil are sunscreens and moisturizers.

You don't have to use a sunscreen or moisturizer with mineral oil-even if suggested in a credible magazine. Take the time and read the ingredients. Mineral oil is usually listed in the top of ingredients.

Good advice? Avoid products with this in it and you are sure to discover a long term benefit to your skin. Remember-mineral oil does not moisturize or protect your skin in any way. And sunscreens containing mineral oil actually attract sun's harmful rays.

By Sandy Alcide, founder Motion Medica fitness skin care.Copyright 2011.

A shocking thing 88% of athletes do to their skin

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 170px; height: 151px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JiQh5XYs7JA/TZNZoAJANsI/AAAAAAAAAHY/Xieu71wkRGI/s400/rhy05013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589910106264319682" />
Time pressed athletes who can't get to the shower after a workout use baby wipes.

Baby wipes contain water, mineral oil, alcohol, propylene glycol, artificial fragrance and methyl and propyl parabens (chemical preservatives). These disposable cloths are made from non-woven fabrics similar to those used in dryer sheets. Most brands are still using the same technology and ingredients when baby wipes were first developed in the late 1970's.

Fitness junkies endure sweat mixed with excess oil, salt and in some activities-dirt. Do baby bottoms endure this?

Most athletes don't realize the swiping motion of baby wipes and sport wipes can push sweat, oil and dirt back into your open pores that naturally open during intense exercise to expel sweat. This leads to possible clogged pores and breakouts. Most just cover the odor and don't kill germs in sweat.

Luckily, from new research there is a convenient botanical mist with active ingredients to kill bacteria in sweat, absorb excess oil and leaves your skin feeling refreshed and clean smelling until you have time to hit the shower.

Of course nothing takes the place of actual cleaning with a cleanser. But for time pressed fitness lovers this is a whole new way to achieve your quick fix for a shower rather than a make-shift alternative.

By Sandy Alcide, founder of Motion Medica fitness skin careCopyright March 2011

Is it acne or rosacea induced by exercise?

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 138px; height: 119px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UCo4TPxhbYw/TX4n8gyxnCI/AAAAAAAAAHI/MVCgD2JxtrU/s400/rosacea-treatment.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583944508534529058" />
Flare-ups of acne during exercise is commonly mistaken for rosacea induced by exercise. Poulopustular is red bumps, often, but not always pus filled. Another side effect of rosacea is bright redness on the face accompanied with red bumps, particularly on the cheeks. Most people assume this is acne-but it's not.

One main trigger of rosacea is brought on by exercise. In addition to red bumps skin conditions can also include dryness, burning and itching. The actual causes of rosacea induced by exercise are unknown, but some possibilities for this form of allergy, can include long term exposure to UV rays, using benzoyl peroxide for acne and chemical peels.

To help flare-ups, if possible, it's best to exercise in a cool climate with limited or no intense sun exposure. Heat and blood and oxygen rushed to the skin's surface during cardiovascular activity attributes to the flare-ups. Of course you can't avoid these conditions brought on by exercise but there are a few preventive measures you can take.

Before exercise avoid eating food high in spices. Drink plenty of water during exercise in intense heat conditions. Avoid using products containing benzoyl peroxide, alcohol and for women, don't wear make-up during exercise as this is an irritant to this skin type prone to rosacea and can contribute to flare-ups.

There is no cure for rosacea. Products containing anti-inflammatory properties and soothing ingredients like aloe vera will help when applied prior to exercise. Products, for internal and external use claiming to cure rosacea induced by exercise are untrue.

By Sandy Alcide founder of Motion Medica fitness skin care Copyright 2011

Acne Induced by Exercise?

Acne Induced by Exercise?

Melanoma On The Rise for Athletes

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 60px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z0AK_FoFHx4/TWfW-4o9pMI/AAAAAAAAAHA/sD0qSwOBw58/s200/what%2Bis%2Bmelanoma.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577663039366079682" />
An overlooked category of persons are at the highest risk of melanoma-athletes.

What is Melanoma?

Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer. It's not as common as other types of skin cancer-but it's the most serious of concern.

Melanoma affects the skin only but it can spread to your organs and bones if not treated and cured in the early stages.

Causes of Melanoma

When spending too much time in the sun without the correct protection against harmful ultraviolet radiation as most athletes do, causes normal skin cells to become abnormal. The abnormal skin cells grow out of control and attack tissues around them. Weekend warriors and avid outdoor fitness lovers may think they are protecting their skin against skin cancer, but not all sun screens are suitable for long term exposure and sweat repellent.

Athletes who don't have melanoma that runs in their families tend to think they are safe with the average sunscreen, or using none at all. This is a dangerous misconception.

Symptoms of melanoma is a change of an existing mole or other uncommon skin growth, even a birthmark you have since childhood. The mole can change color, be lumpy, rounded, ooze fluid or sometimes bleed.

When your doctor checks your skin for melanoma a sample tissue from the mole will be taken and a pathologist will check the tissue for cancer cells. In some cases, a very thick cancerous mole may leave a scar and additional surgery will be needed to remove the scar.

The countries that have the highest amount of melanoma among athletes are Australia, United States, Canada and The Netherlands.

A sunblock, known as a "physical block" that completely blocks ultraviolet radiation, and does not absorb into the pores of the skin must be used by the outdoor fitness person. Z-Cote, a transparent zinc oxide professionally recognized in the dermatological community must be in the sunblock. A sunblock that does not absorb into the skin, even with sweat expelling from pores, will help not to clog the pores possibly leading to breakouts. One reason, some athletes opt not to use a serious sun protector.

The Advanced Protection SPF 30 is a leading seller among athletes who are serious about avoiding melanoma and used by doctors.

The new American Athletic Skin Care Association is also working to bring awareness to this skin ailment for athletes.

By Sandy Alcide founder of Motion Medica fitness skin care.
Copyright 2011

The importance of exfoliating your skin

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 147px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b2m-gJvw2RM/TVwEhELCswI/AAAAAAAAAG4/nHeGA0bX7bU/s200/exfoliating.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5574335404880081666" />
Athletes and weekend warriors have a higher dead skin cell turnover rate. If you, or someone else, finds your skin to appeal dull, lackluster with occasional or frequent breakouts, chances are you are not exfoliating enough with the correct product.

Exfoliating is the most easiest and common natural way to remove dead skin cells without chemical peels or costly microdermabrasion. It will actually give you better results when done frequently.

The best time to exfoliate is after a sweat induced by exercise. It will open your pores during exercise so you will need to exfoliate within a short period of time after exercise.

This will remove dead skin cells that can't be seen by the human eye and leave your skin's surface clean and ready for new skin cells to regenerate. Time constraints with our busy workout schedules needs the convenience of an exfoliater that also contains a cleanser. Exfoliating agents alone will not clean the skin.

Use an exfoliater that will not abrade delicate skin tissue and contains no chemicals that get get into your bloodstream via open pores. Never use a brush on your delicate facial skin unless you want broken capillaries and exfoliating agents that contain aluminum will eventually make its way into your bloodstream.

The Tenacious Champion AHA/BHA 2 In 1 Exfoliating Cleanser is one of the most highly recommended exfoliating cleanser on the market for fitness lovers.

Do this treatment on a twice weekly basis and, in this world of judging, will give a healthy look to healthy skin.

Copyright Sandy Alcide, founder Motion Medica fitness skin care.

Preventing dry skin in cold climate with an athletic lifestyle

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 199px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/TQpg26x8jsI/AAAAAAAAAGo/zsn9QhTH4jI/s400/118-300x199.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5551355987295506114" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 197px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/TQpgwvEYSYI/AAAAAAAAAGg/FcNriCT3X4Y/s400/BUPA-XC-elite.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5551355881072380290" />
An active lifestyle can bring on a new set of challenges to your skin.

Extreme climatic conditions can cause dry, brittle skin. Cold air lacks moisture and indoor heat causes dryness, a common complaint among winter loving athletes.

This is the reason why there must be special care for this skin type in order to have smooth healthy skin. Extreme dryness to your skin adds a whole new dimension to your skin care regimen.

You must protect your skin when exercising outdoors. Do not use petroleum jelly as this will clog the pores that naturally open during exercise to expel sweat. Your skin also needs to breathe even in outdoor cold conditions. Before heading outdoors use a sunscreen with zinc oxide in it. Not only will it protect your skin from the sun's rays but it will help hold moisture in the skin.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! After washing away sweat with a gentle astringent cleanser, always apply moisturizer after every cleanse. Never skip this step in your skin care regimen. If you cleanse at night before bed time , in the morning just splash some luke warm water on your face and follow with moisturizer. If heading out to ski or for a long run apply sunscreen after your moisturizer.

You must continue to exfoliate dead skin cells with a gentle exfoliating cleanser. The removal of dead skin cells will help the emollients in the moisturizer to penetrate the skin more effectively. Removal of dead skin cells and keeping adequate topical moisture levels will help ward off dry skin and reveal smooth, soft skin.

Your face that is the most exposed seems to get the most attention, but the same regimen applies to your body even under protective clothing the dry air will effect the skin too.

By Sandy Alcide, founder Motion Medica fitness skin care.

Teaching athletic kids about skin care

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 168px; height: 168px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/TP0tddYx7hI/AAAAAAAAAGY/_yoUqTj9MzM/s400/sport.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547640300118339090" />
As with all habits parents lead by example. If you take care of your skin most likely your children will follow. But how do you teach kids to take care of their skin when they have no interest in it?

Here are a few pointers....

In the single digit ages parents must supervise and be diligent of cleansing their child's skin. When there is no bath night the child must be supervised at the sink and get them into the habit of washing their face and hands.

Tell your kids about the important job their skin has to do. It keeps infections out of the body and keeps them from getting sick. When they take care of their skin they are helping skin do it's job!

Taking care of the skin today, will help with future problems, like acne, wrinkles and even skin cancer.

One simple way to take care of your skin is to keep it clean. This is essential for an active child in sports to prevent acne from their sweaty activities which harbors acne causing bacteria. Tell them how important it is to wear sunscreen when playing outdoors. You may want to show them a picture of a person's skin who neglected it, by being riddled with acne, and lots of wrinkles and dry skin at a young age from too much sun with no sunscreen protection.

Over zealous cleansing is unnecessary. Cleansers should not contain salicylic acid as it is too over sensitizing for this tender young skin. A gentle cleanser with lots of natural astringents will do the job and never apply alcohol based products to the skin as this will dry and irritate their skin.

Sports active tweens and teenagers should make a good habit to cleanse their hands (which will transfer dirt to the skin), and face following the sport and always before bed time. If skin is thoroughly cleansed at bed time just some luke warm water will do in the morning and a lip balm to prevent chapped lips from water.

Children of all ages and those who do not practice sports should never be permitted to go to bed without washing their face and hands if it's not bath night.

My own daughter who is twelve is now an avid runner and independently cleanses her face after her runs and immediately coming home from school when she has physical education. She told me a lot of kids in her school the same age as her has acne but she doesn't. It proves this method of teaching your kids holds true and it's never too late to start it.

Start this skin healthy habit now and they will have their parents/guardians to thank for healthy adult skin.

Motion Medica's Unwavering Determination Daily Cleanser is a simple solution for fresh faces and is gentle on young skin and washing away a hard day's play!

By Sandy Alcide, founder of Motion Medica fitness skin care. www.MotionMedica.com

Alcohol can stress your skin

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 208px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/TPL37WH24JI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/r531KSFLbCY/s320/WineGoneBad.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544766690169381010" />
During the holidays, and off training times, it's easy to drink too much. And as people age, their metabolisms typically slow down, so, you often feel worse after drinking-less.Alcohol can wreck havoc on your skin.

The ethanol in alcohol dilates blood vessels, says David Colbert, a dermatologist in New York City. "Initially you might flush a bit during a night out", he says. "But over time too much drinking can stretch capillaries, sometimes to the point where they expand, giving you a permanent red hue."

Alcohol also dehydrates your skin, leaving it with a dry, weathered appearance. If you do some drinking, before you go to sleep drink plenty of water even if it means some trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night. At bed time, be sure to cleanse your face and apply a liberal amount of moisturizer. This will help with the appearance of dehydrated skin the morning after.

If you want to socialize with alcohol, try to stay with the lesser alcohol content such as light beer or wine.

If you do wake up with a nasty hangover, sweat those toxins out with a good sweaty workout and drink up on lots of water. No matter how much you have to push yourself it will be well worth the effort.

By Sandy Alcide www.MotionMedica.com

Misleading labeling of natural skin care

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/TOWUekM4syI/AAAAAAAAAGI/9J7PsFgoto8/s400/confused-woman1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540998169383973666" />
In case you want to try a new "natural" product on the skin care market read this first.

Misleading labeling by manufacturers of natural and organic personal care products is resulting in consumer confusion. One of the greatest points of confusion in the skin care industry occurs when the word "natural" is used on the label to describe the nature of the product.

More companies are targeting athletic or exercise inclined persons because of their healthy lifestyles.

Natural products mean a lack, or processed ingredients (synthetic/chemical), or a non-chemical "process" is used in extracting the botanicals. Unfortunately, when these products are tested they are rarely organic or natural.

A growing number of skin care companies have been making natural or organic claims. Organic is when no pesticides are used at all and the herbs and botanicals are grown inside greenhouses. A more expensive growing process as smaller amounts can only be grown as opposed to vast outdoor fields.

According to Policy Director, Tom Hutchinson of The Organic Trade Association (OTC). "A personal skin care product that claims to be natural must have at least 70% natural ingredients". Most culprits of this misleading marketing are the inexpensive chain store brands and in some cases, the expensive brands found in department stores. The average ratio is only 10%-20% natural ingredients and the remaining synthetic ingredients or water. Also, in order to produce a mass amount, the natural method of cold pressing the botanicals are not used, but chemicals to extract the botanicals are.

Although the OTC has intentions of cracking down on these companies, Tom Hutchinson advises; "Consumers should be aware that at the present time there is nothing precluding a marketer from making all natural claims regardless of ingredient content."

If you suspect that it sounds too good to be true, don't buy it and if a well known and even well liked celebrity is endorsing it, they may not know the true value of the product.

Stay fabulous and a savvy consumer.

By Sandy Alcide founder of Motion Medica skin care. Copyright 2010.

Why wearing make-up during exercise is bad for your skin

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 113px; height: 113px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/TNwgKAcQjaI/AAAAAAAAAGA/wYx9uWbSDKY/s400/Make%2Bup%2Band%2Bsweat%2Bpic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538336998048173474" />
With the exception of eye make-up and lipstick, liquid foundation and mineral make-up should be not be used on the skin during exercise.

You have 650 sweat glands per square inch. When you perspire during a workout your pores open naturally to expel sweat and natural toxins as methylphenol, urea and lactic acid.

When you mix sweat with make-up it will attract bacteria that will cause pimples, and white/blackheads, a form of acne.

The skin needs to turn over new cells, an avid exerciser produces more dead skin cells. When pores are blocked with make-up this won't happen. Your skin needs to "breathe", when you don't allow this to happen dull skin, pimples and congested skin will result from this.This may not happen immediately, but over a period of time it eventually will wreck havoc on your skin.

Make-up that is non-comedogenic, is not referring to using it while exercising. Pure mineral make-up that does not contain oils or talc are no exception. Most of these pure mineral make-ups contain beeswax, lanolin and carmine that can clog the pores.

Rather than experiencing these negative results, take prevention before it happens. It may be worth the small investment of time to cleanse your skin before a workout and go make-up free.

No make-up in the world can beat the natural beautiful post workout glow of a self confident woman.

By Sandy Alcide founder of Motion Medica fitness skin care Innovators of beauty skin care What actually constitutes the societal holy grail (ultimate goal) of healthy radiant skin is as follows:

* smooth, firm and elastic tone
* free of creases or deep lines
* has some healthy reddish tint (regardless of skin color) from profuse blood circulation
* ample water holding capability (no dehydration)
* uses little or no cosmetics (elle' naturelle)
* has no skin cracks
***clear blemish free skin is the number one factor in attraction based on psychological studies in 170 different human cultures.

Biologically, such skin has the following characteristics:

* a strong well formed blood microcirculation (exercise contributes to this)
* strong collagen and elastin fibers (prevents skin sagging)
* ample water-holding capabilities (don't deprive your skin of inadequate water consumption)
* has adequate, but not excessive natural oils

The key to healthy skin is maintaining the skin's acid mantle which is commonly known as PH balance (P)otential (H)ydrogen and a rapid turnover of skin cells (which a fitness warrior has the edge on so long as they are properly removed). These cells rebuild damaged collagen and elastin to maintain your skin's strength and resiliency, but must be removed by exfoliation to reveal new skin cells. This will also contributes to ample water holding capabilities.

Any damage to the biocirculation of capillaries and small blood vessels impairs proper nutrient flow to the skin, thus leading to aging and lackluster. Damaging skin rays will contribute to aging and cheap skin care products and cosmetics. Lack of proper skin care products for the fitness lifestyle can dull or clog skin's pores resulting in acne and dullness.

Use a sunless tanning lotion or bronzer than a tanning bed if one must have bronzed skin. Tanning beds and unprotected sun exposure causes a weathered leathery appearance of skin very common with athletes.

No harsh soaps should be used or are necessary, even for removing sweat, dirt and oil from a workout. Harsh soaps will strip your skin of essential oils. Avoid cheap synthetic, chemical based ingredients and products with alcohol. Alcohol is unnecessary for clearing acne and a common mistake among athletes. The leading cleanser for the fitness lifestyle is The Stellar Performance Post Workout Cleanser

Most people think it costs a fortune to have celebrity looking skin. A common misconception as most celebrities use lines that are marked up for 'staus quo", and have top notch photographers with air brushing techniques. One who does not have the same budget as a celebrity or renowned athlete can use products just as good, if not better in quality and dedicate a little extra time to their skin. Think of your skin care regimen as importantly as your workout regimen and you will look as fit as you feel. Healthy skin compliments a healthy physique.

By Sandy Alcide

fitness athlete skin care

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/TIQSDIGVwFI/AAAAAAAAAFY/yHJ6lyMsOR4/s320/DSC_5504.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513551688731312210" />
It's sad but true: in the world of skin care, its usually the big companies with the big advertising budgets coming out with big hits.

Fortunately for the little guy, there is certainly room in the market, at least if the tremendous success of Motion Medica skin care is any indication. But if a person contemplating anabolic steroids, for any reason, the skin can reveal negative side effects of the drug.

Corticosteroids (topical steroids) prescribed by doctors, are absorbed into the skin in the form of creams, ointments and lotions. Corticosteroids stop these cells from producing various inflammation causing chemicals that are released when the skin reacts to allergens or irritation.

Anabolic steroids have few medical uses. Their primary use is to promote weight gain and muscle development in animals. Rarely prescribed to humans, the muscle building (anabolic) and androgenic effects of these drugs make them appealing to athletes and bodybuilders. Taken orally or topically, these steroids steroids come in the form of tablets, capsules, a solution for injection or cream to rub into the skin.

Although a muscular body may be appealing, these steroids have been associated with less appealing side effects for the skin such as acne, course or dry skin, cysts and very oily skin. These side effects of the skin can occur if these steroids are taken orally, injected or applied topically.
Inappropriate use of anabolic steroids stimulates the oil producing glands sebaceous glands. Over-production of this sebum leads to acne. The most "stubborn" acne is called cystic acne. This is a severe form of acne where pimples develop into small cysts. Cystic acne is caused by excessive build up of sebum in the pores and is not caused by hygiene or the lack of.

Cystic acne can affect the face, chest, back, shoulders and in rare cases, the upper arms. If cystic acne is not treated in the early stages by stopping the abuse of steroids, and with prescribed antibiotics, it can lead to permanent scarring, also known as "potholes" on the skin, most commonly on face and upper chest.

Another apparent side effect is skin becoming dry or rough, with a "scaly" appearance. There are a couple of reasons for this. While using steroids the side effect for rough skin is caused by the pores in the skin becoming larger. This is more prominent in women because they usually have smoother skin than men. If a person is suffering from acne brought on by very oily skin, a natural tendency is to overly cleanse the skin stripping the skin of it's natural oils, especially when harsh soaps with chemicals are used.

Another reason to stop the abuse of this drug is a possible, but less common side effect caused by long-term use of steroids is Cushing's Syndrome, which causes dark or purplish marks or bumps on the skin that can effect both men and women.

Exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle. It can make you look and feel stronger and healthier.

These benefits can outshine any drug for a healthier post workout glow to the skin!

By Sandy Alcide. This is a mineral that is useful by your body to create protein with antioxidant properties. The best source for this skin loving mineral is Brazil Nuts. Other nuts will do but Brazil Nuts are found to be the best source of selenium. Whole wheat, turkey and fish are helpful sources too.

Antioxidants. Yes, I know, we hear so much about antioxidants. But you need antioxidants to protect your skin from pollution and UVA radiation. Include these foods in your diet that are chock full of antioxidants perfect to help your skin battle free radicals.: Citrus fruits, cacao, blueberries (organic-non organic are loaded with pesticides), prunes, leafy green vegetables like kale or spinach. And, drink your white tea and green tea.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Those of you who worked with me on your skin care regimens know that I'm big on Omega-3 fatty Acids for radiant skin. By helping to maintain healthy cell membranes they battle pre-mature aging by keeping your cells hydrated and free of toxins. Some best food sources are wild salmon just watch the bones), chia and flax seed, walnuts and sardines.

Liquids. Although almost all fitness lovers realize they need plenty of hydration, I'm often surprised at many athletic persons who don't consume enough fluid. Thirsty? if so, it means your skin is also. "Juicy" fruits and vegetables are great for hydration and pack vitamins for healthy skin. Include watermelons, strawberries, apples and cantaloupe in your diet. And, obviously, drink plenty of filtered or spring water.

Next time you indulge in these foods remember you are not only doing your body good, but your skin will show it too!

Sandy Alcide

Why is my sports bra giving me acne?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 307px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hjFuLIOlPR8/TwxhoSQ1kRI/AAAAAAAAANg/9QkWd2SuBiQ/s400/blue%2Bsports%2Bbra.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696034973441954066" />
This is a frequently asked question that can't be answered in 2 or 3 sentences.

Your sports bra is not the only blame of your acne.

It's actually a type of acne called Acne Mechanica. It's a a form of acne caused by aggravated heat from exercise by covered skin from a sports bra (less air circulation.

Constant repetitive "friction" and pressure causes Acne Mechanica. Tight clothing, such as sports bras that are made with synthetic fibers as opposed to breathable cotton, don't allow the skin to breathe, thus causing Acne Mechanica to form.

Fitness lovers wearing tight headbands, sports bras, bikers'shorts, helmets and backpacks are most likely to get Acne Mechanica.

The best way to avoid this acne is to get a better fitting sports bra. Your sports bra is not suppose to move or "bite into" the skin. You may need to switch from your current brand. A better fitting sports bra will stop the "friction" caused by constant movement of the bra thus causing this acne.

The most popular class of athletes who become victim to Acne Mechanica are runners, sports players who wear shoulder pads and/or helmets and (cyclists) have this acne on buttock area from the bike seat.

When you have Acne Mechanica, you should use a liquid cleanser that contains Alpha Hydroxy Acid. A natural acid derived from sources such as sugar cane, willow bark, apples, oranges and lemons. Suggested cleanser is the Stellar Performance Post Workout Cleanser by Motion Medica. Over time, if Acne Mechanica is left untreated it can cause permanent skin scars.

By Sandy Alcide. Not only does it work as an anti-oxidant it also helps to fight free radicals. Vitamin A plays a strong role in strengthening the protective tissue of your skin and repairing skin tissue. Skin tissue protects the body from water loss and dehydrated skin. The skin tissue also uses specialized pigment cells called melanocytes to protect the body from ultra-violet radiation and helps regulate body temperature and metabolism.

Vitamin A is also known to help fight off damaging effects from physical stress on the body and sun exposure that is common with an athletic lifestyle.

If your skin is dry or rough with a combination of acne, white/blackheads you are probably lacking sufficient vitamin A. For persons 18 years and older the daily recommended dosage of vitamin A is 10,000 IUs.

The best sources of vitamin A include animal products such as oily fish, eggs, cheese and non fat milk.

Vegetables, provide carotenoids which the body can transform into retinol (a vitamin A acid). The best sources of carotenoids include yellow, red and dark green plants such as carrots, spinach, bell peppers, kale and turnip greens.

MYTHS ABOUT SKIN CARE

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 282px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/S9hjHY_hZ6I/AAAAAAAAACU/64LgMjxO9TQ/s320/Furies-Erinyes-Nemesis6x5%4075.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465227126433212322" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 199px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/S9hJoFRSN0I/AAAAAAAAAB4/ZeNPFe7FV8g/s200/aloe+pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465199100772366146" />
The following are some top myths about skin care which can make your skin care lifestyle choices less confusing.

BREAKOUTS ARE NOT CAUSED BY WHAT YOU EAT-FALSEAs fitness minded people its common we eat clean and nutritious. However, during holidays and off training times we may want to "live a little" with some forbidden food.

Many recent studies have shown eating a high-fat diet (even occasionally) can increase your skin's sebum output, leaving skin unnecessarily oilier. Pizza and cookies have a high glycemic index of carbohydrates which quickly convert to glucose, raises blood sugar level that releases insulin and androgen-the hormones that signal our sebacious glands to get into high gear producing more oil than needed, thus leading to possible breakouts-regardless of what your age is. Some persons tend to eat or binge on the wrong foods while under stress, then lead to believe its the "stress" causing their breakouts.

IF YOU WEAR SUNSCREEN, YOU WON'T GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D-FALSEVitamin D helps to boost the immune system and absorption of calcium. new studies have shown it also helps with depression. You can get plenty of benefits of vitamin D without going unprotected with sunscreen. Choose a multi-vitamin that has 1000 I.Us of vitamin D low fat milk fortified with vitamin D. The rumors of vitamin D deficiency were proven to be exaggerated with many diagnoses were the result of lab errors!

APPLY SUNSCREEN 30 MINUTES BEFORE GOING IN THE SUN-FALSEThis statement always bewildered me. You don't have to wait 30 minutes to head outdoors after applying a sun block.

"Physical" blocks, which contain titanium dioxide and micronized zinc oxide are almost instantly effective. It is vital to apply your sunscreen before you go outside even if its a five minute walk to your car, the tennis court or a run. In only the five minutes you are unprotected, the rays of the sun can cause damage, and, make a habit of all your unprotected 5 minute walks the time adds up for the sun to cause havoc. Before you get dressed in your workout attire, bathing suit, or clothing dot your sunscreen on and remember-the sun can penetrate through light colored clothing.

SPRITZ YOUR FACE WITH WATER WHEN ON A PLANE-FALSE
A BIG no no! Yes, most of us make an effort to combat the low humidity and poor air quality on a plane. But, spritzing your face with water in this environment can actually make your face drier!

The water evaporates and takes with it any moisture that is already on your face. If you like using a water bottle spritzer, be sure to incorporate some liquid aloe vera into the bottle which will give the moisture it's staying power. Your key defense against airplane air quality is drinking lots of bottles water and no alcohol beverages during flight.

Botanical extracts that are toxic to skin!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 370px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/S2ng0ztIUnI/AAAAAAAAABY/4pT5PFO0Uxs/s400/foxglove-flower-pictures_15338.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434121623236530802" />
New skin care companies are marketing products without safety testing of exotic plant extracts which have high incidences of skin irritation and with long term use can be toxic.

Some natural plant extracts fall outside the definitions of "cosmetic" ingredients and have never been tested for safety by the FDA.

Many of these new skin care companies advertise the value of various combinations of these exotic plant extracts in their products but provide no clinical studies that actually support their claim.

The following is a list of plants and tree extracts to avoid in skin care products:

Dieffenbachia
Castor bean
Daffodil (keep it as pretty flower in the garden)
Buttercup (in Daffodil family)
Foxglove (another pretty flower only to look at)
Tulip "Bulb"
Narcissus Bulb
Cow slip
Milkweed
Broomweed
Rubber Tree extract
Fig Tree Sap

Any botanical skin care product that costs very little can be appealing to those who are unaware of these very "nice sounding" ingredients. Your cleansing methods are more specialized on your face.

"Never shock your face". Don't use very cold or very hot water. Both methods can cause broken capillaries and red marks around nose and cheeks. Always use luke warm water when wetting or rinsing your face.

Don't use a wash cloth on your face when cleansing. This can irritate skin. Make sure your hands are clean, free from dirt and germs especially after working out with gym equipment and sports equipment. Apply cleanser in your hands, rub hands together in a circular motion.

Starting with your cheek area use gentle circular motion. Use up and down strokes for the sides of your nose. For the chin, top of the mouth and forehead,; use straight back and forth motion.

The best and most effective wash is one that includes some kind of massage. When you stimulate your lymph system it brings blood and oxygen circulating to the skin.

Always use gentle movement. Don't use quick strokes or heavy pressure on your face.

Written by Sandy Alcide

Acne and Exercise

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__8B7IUpwTAw/S1Cnu6rfQAI/AAAAAAAAAA4/xoK-yIOR13A/s320/stephanie2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427021975448928258" />
Working out at the gym may tone your muscles and cause the ladies and gents to swoon over your chiseled physique. Some of these are innocent opinions of people, who are entitled to share their opinion, but usually add that the product is okay, or are not that happy with their skin. Some are even doctors, who don't lead athletic lifestyles.

Most persons are just down right confused about what is the best cleanser for after a workout or before a workout. A moisturizer for an athletic lifestyle. When one works up a sweat via a raised heart rate from a 3-4 mile run or one hour of weight lifting, those oil producing sebacious glands are in over drive.

The avid exerciser also produces more dead skin cells which is akin to saran wrap, a translucent coating on the skin invisible by human eye, not removed correctly and frequently can lead to skin dullness, acne and dryness. Exfoliate? Sure, it was suggested an apricot scrub is great. Apricot seeds are known to abrade delicate skin tissue, even when not used frequently. But, hey, its only about 6 bucks for a big jar of it. Invest in your skin. Its the most visible and largest organ of your body.

Let me start with cleansers. A staple to a sweaty post workout cleanse. Most of the suggested cleansers for after a workout are mass produced brands that any person can use, including sedentary lifestyles. Currently, I noticed a drug store brand that simply added the word "sport" after the word cleanser. It lists a brief amount of ingredients, mostly synthetic and chemicals with parabens. None of these ingredients work as astringents to kill off the bacteria found in sweat thus leading to acne or any natural emollients to keep adequate moisture levels in the skin from excessive water loss from sweating and sodium, which can be drying to the skin.

But, the general consumer will purchase the product because its only five or eight bucks and the packaging and graphics are appealing to the eye. In the long run, its expensive to buy cheap.

Most of these cleansers contain a higher amount of water than active ingredients so the supply lasts a very little time, before you know it, you are running back to the drug store to buy more. Also, although they make strong claims as "deep pore cleansing" and "keeps your skin worry free from working out", the formula of ingredients don't come even close to achieving these claims.

Then we have the brands the department stores carry. You see, there is no such thing as "department store brands". Another misleading statement to the consumer who thinks if they are purchasing skin care products at a fancy department store with a high price tag they are doing their athletic skin a good thing. Not so.

These brands rent space from the department store. And they pay big bucks to do so, which in the end the consumer actually pays for and for the fancy corrugated packaging and sophisticated glass jars and bottles. Ask the person behind the counter what she/he would recommend for acne induced by exercise, and for certain, they will recommend a general cleanser for acne; period. And a moisturizer for oily skin. Sorry, won't do the job. They may even tell you how great it cleared up their skin when they don't break a sweat from exercise 4-5 times a week.

Maybe I'm too honest, which is why I will never be a millionaire. And that's okay with me. Because ethics and a great conscious is priceless.

With a fitness lifestyle, do you have special skin care needs? Yes. You also need to think of your skin care "regimen" as importantly as you do your workout regimen.

http://www.motionmedica.com/main/articles.aspx

After reading my articles, I'd love to hear your opinion about products for the fitness lifestyle. And when someone recommends a cleanser for after a workout or body creme after showering up to 3 times a day-do your homework.

Use a skin care line specially formulated for the athletic one and you'll experience and learn the difference. Stick with an easy skin care regimen too. But, easy does not mean just wiping sweat off your face with a towelette. Another "worst" thing one can do to their skin after a workout.
